A total of ten houses were built along what is now West Circle Drive, with an additional house just north of the row. Four houses were built, three in a row and one across the lane; they were designed by Frank J. Scott and Rufus W. Bunnell of Toledo, Ohio. All three were designed by famed Detroit architect Elijah E. Myers\u2014creator of Michigan\u2019s Capitol building, as well as those of Texas and Colorado. The fanciest and largest of these, a brick structure which we now call \u2116&nbsp;1, stood at the west end of the row on the present site of Maude Gilchrist Hall and served as the President\u2019s House from 1875 until 1915. Lewis McLouth was hired as the first in that role. When McLouth resigned two years later, Board Secretary Henry G. Cook<\/a>, Professor of Zoology and Entomology. (The original apiary was moved for the <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/botany-lab\/\">Botany Lab<\/a>, then razed for <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/abbot-hall\/\">Abbot Hall<\/a>. Cook placed this new, larger building behind his own residence of \u2116&nbsp;3 both for his own convenience and in hopes of steering clear of a burst of new construction at that time.) Upon Cook\u2019s resignation in 1893, Entomology was split from Zoology and the apiary was converted into a residence for a new Instructor in Entomology.<sup data-fn=\"4bcd3b90-b9cc-4ea0-b765-d6c44324b16e\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#4bcd3b90-b9cc-4ea0-b765-d6c44324b16e\" id=\"4bcd3b90-b9cc-4ea0-b765-d6c44324b16e-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The final two additions to the row were multi-unit dwellings rather than single-family homes.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/howard-terrace\/\">Howard Terrace<\/a>&nbsp;was built in 1888 at the east end of the row. Faculty Row was gradually used for other purposes, and then almost totally obliterated. For example, the President\u2019s house was converted into a dormitory for senior women in 1915, then housed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/hospital\/\">College Hospital<\/a>&nbsp;from 1925 until 1939. From 1939 to 1946 it was a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/womens-coops\/\">women\u2019s cooperative house<\/a>&nbsp;known as Alice B. Cowles Hall\u2014a name later applied to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/cowles-house\/\">Faculty Row \u2116&nbsp;7<\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"83426f87-3ae1-41e9-9704-87173859ed6f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#83426f87-3ae1-41e9-9704-87173859ed6f\" id=\"83426f87-3ae1-41e9-9704-87173859ed6f-link\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1919, the house built as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/faculty-9\/\">\u2116&nbsp;9<\/a>&nbsp;made the first of its two moves away from Faculty Row. In 1922, \u2116s 2, 3, and 6 were vacated by their professors (<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/vedder\/\">H. K. Vedder<\/a>, Civil Engineering; W. B. Barrows, Zoology; and W. W. Johnston, English) to be converted to housing for female students. E. A. Bessey and family moved to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/bessey\/\">their new off-campus home<\/a>&nbsp;from \u2116&nbsp;7, which was given over to Board Secretary H.&nbsp;H.&nbsp;Halladay, who vacated the newest house at the eastern end of the row. Also in 1922,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/howard-terrace\/\">Howard Terrace<\/a>&nbsp;was demolished to make room for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/home-economics\/\">Home Economics<\/a>&nbsp;building.<sup data-fn=\"c9ffd24f-b475-4bb2-881d-ffbe4c515f1a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c9ffd24f-b475-4bb2-881d-ffbe4c515f1a\" id=\"c9ffd24f-b475-4bb2-881d-ffbe4c515f1a-link\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u2116&nbsp;14, the Professor of Entomology\u2019s residence, \u201cso closely guarded by trees\u2026 that many people who spent a long time on the campus never knew of its existence,\u201d was razed in 1926 to clear the site for the new Weather Bureau building now known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/weather\/#1927\">Wills House<\/a>. From 1897 onward it had been the home of Professor Rufus Pettit and his wife Jessie. They moved to a lovely new-built (1925) bungalow with eyebrow dormers and matching porch roof at 236 Cowley Avenue in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/oak-ridge\/\">Oak Ridge<\/a>&nbsp;subdivision.<sup data-fn=\"22637ca3-ad32-421a-a2b1-3ce3ca2a6539\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#22637ca3-ad32-421a-a2b1-3ce3ca2a6539\" id=\"22637ca3-ad32-421a-a2b1-3ce3ca2a6539-link\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When Robert Shaw was named the eleventh President of the College in 1928, he and his family moved from \u2116&nbsp;5 to \u2116&nbsp;2. Upon his retirement in 1941 President Emeritus Shaw and his wife May moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/shaw\/\">a new home<\/a> on their sizeable property north of the City that would later become Shaw Estates, and \u2116&nbsp;2 became a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/womens-coops\/\">women\u2019s cooperative house<\/a>&nbsp;aptly named \u201cShaw House.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1945\u20131946, houses \u2116&nbsp;1 through \u2116&nbsp;5 were torn down and replaced with the West Circle residence halls of Gilchrist, Yakeley, and Landon. In its last year and a half, \u2116&nbsp;3 had been used as the original International Center.<sup data-fn=\"cd62ec41-d3b9-4303-ba8b-02d76e3aaa43\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#cd62ec41-d3b9-4303-ba8b-02d76e3aaa43\" id=\"cd62ec41-d3b9-4303-ba8b-02d76e3aaa43-link\">9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The house built in 1879 as \u2116&nbsp;8, commonly known as the \u201cTaft house\u201d after former resident&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/taft\/\">Levi Taft<\/a>, persisted in its position just west of the Union\u2019s (original) south entrance until 1931. From 1921 on it was used as a Home Economics practice house.<sup data-fn=\"c039d48b-2003-42cb-84ea-91ae2d4daaf7\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c039d48b-2003-42cb-84ea-91ae2d4daaf7\" id=\"c039d48b-2003-42cb-84ea-91ae2d4daaf7-link\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The easternmost house, built in 1885 as \u2116&nbsp;10, was assigned to President David Friday during his brief term 1922\u20131923, then also became a Home Economics practice house. Somewhat confusingly, in later years it was labelled \u201cHome Economics House No. 8,\u201d and housed the H.E. nursery school. In 1922 it was given over to the M.A.C. Union, presumably until the memorial building could be completed, but was soon reassigned \u201cto house student women.\u201d That assignment also did not last long, as it became the President&#8217;s house for Kenyon Butterfield\u2019s term, 1924\u20131928.
