Image source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/sources\/#B\">Beal<\/a>, p.\u00a018.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Alongside the hallowed halls of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/college-hall\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52\">College Hall<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/saints-rest\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1164\">Saints\u2019 Rest<\/a>, this modest, 28-by-40-foot barn was constructed in 1856\u201357 of the same locally produced bricks. It stabled the college\u2019s horses until a much larger \u201cNew\u201d Horse Barn was completed in 1872, after which it was used as a carpentry shop.<sup data-fn=\"6732097f-0213-4c18-8001-d67a722e7ddd\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6732097f-0213-4c18-8001-d67a722e7ddd\" id=\"6732097f-0213-4c18-8001-d67a722e7ddd-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Like its two contemporaries, the building suffered from the haste of its construction. By 1873 its south (rear) wall had settled and needed to be partially rebuilt, caused by the barn\u2019s foundations being pushed inward by the surrounding earth; a concrete floor for the basement was poured, \u201cto prevent any further yielding of the side walls.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"16eaee4f-5a3a-4815-8402-e1fe6b87a697\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#16eaee4f-5a3a-4815-8402-e1fe6b87a697\" id=\"16eaee4f-5a3a-4815-8402-e1fe6b87a697-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The brick work shop\u2019s usage continued to evolve over the next few decades as both its surroundings and technology changed. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/power\/\">second boiler house<\/a>&nbsp;was built nearby in 1904, and within a couple of years the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/farm-complex\/\">farm complex<\/a>&nbsp;was moved further south. The shop turned from carpentry to blacksmithing to become the Farm Mechanics Shop, and supported farm equipment repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Ultimately, as the farm continued to grow, the shop finally became woefully undersized for the work, and the last survivor of the College\u2019s original three buildings was razed in June 1922.<sup data-fn=\"f0d6a20e-d3e6-40a6-8647-37018e9a461d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f0d6a20e-d3e6-40a6-8647-37018e9a461d\" id=\"f0d6a20e-d3e6-40a6-8647-37018e9a461d-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> Professor H. H. Musselman (M.A.C.&nbsp;\u201908) of the Department of Farm Mechanics offered this tribute:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">It is perhaps worthy of note that 3,554 students, the greater majority of whom have been farm boys, have had instruction in this building in either Wood or Forge work or both. Work in this shop has always been kept closely related to farm practice. Many of the short course men taking these courses have considered them the most practical for their needs that the College has had to offer.
