The first dormitory buildings&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/saints-rest\/\">Saints\u2019 Rest<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/williams-hall\/\">Williams Hall<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/wells-hall\/\">Wells Hall<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/abbot-hall\/\">Abbot Hall<\/a>&nbsp;had no indoor plumbing. They relied on surface wells for their water supply with, one presumes, conscripted freshmen to haul the water. These wells occasionally ran dry and were the source of a bout of typhoid fever that afflicted the College in 1886. The following year a proper artesian well solved the water supply problem but of course, no indoor plumbing meant no bathtubs, showers, or toilets. Washbasins, outhouse privies, and chamber pots were the norm. Until the mid-1890s the College also lacked the infrastructure it would have needed to support those improvements. As Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/rolla-carpenter\/\">Rolla C. Carpenter<\/a>&nbsp;pointed out in his final annual report to the Board in 1890, \u201cThere are no sewers completed that would permit the use of water closets at the various dormitories.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"478e0d9e-33bc-43e5-bb73-3c815fee3af0\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#478e0d9e-33bc-43e5-bb73-3c815fee3af0\" id=\"478e0d9e-33bc-43e5-bb73-3c815fee3af0-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1889 the Board of Agriculture allocated $300 toward bathing facilities, provided that the students would raise a matching amount.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/robert-kedzie\/\">Professor Kedzie<\/a>\u2014a medical doctor who understood well the benefits of good hygiene\u2014provided the $300 match as a loan to the students, to be paid back through membership dues ($1 annually) and user fees (ten cents a visit for non-members) that also covered operating expenses and wages for a caretaker.<sup data-fn=\"b509478d-b4f7-41cf-b3aa-31f13c3683d8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b509478d-b4f7-41cf-b3aa-31f13c3683d8\" id=\"b509478d-b4f7-41cf-b3aa-31f13c3683d8-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The resulting facility was functional but rudimentary at best, not surprising given the meager budget. A wooden building held a total of ten zinc tubs, set and plumbed by Carpenter and a crew of college staffers. Hot and cold water were piped from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/power\/\">boiler house<\/a>&nbsp;(1884), which stood just to the west.<sup data-fn=\"86d50cdf-81c0-4985-ba37-de1ca02ee331\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#86d50cdf-81c0-4985-ba37-de1ca02ee331\" id=\"86d50cdf-81c0-4985-ba37-de1ca02ee331-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Despite the minimal privacy of ten tubs together in one large room, after more than three decades without anything of the kind this must have seemed like the lap of luxury. Nevertheless as the College grew, the bathhouse quickly went from barely adequate to \u201ctotally unfit for use.\u201d Kuhn, one of few historians to broach the subject, writes of it in an almost romanticized tone: \u201cthe line of waiting men sometimes grew so long that late-comers passed by for a plunge in the river.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"41f203bb-d593-4647-b913-620dfeefd26c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#41f203bb-d593-4647-b913-620dfeefd26c\" id=\"41f203bb-d593-4647-b913-620dfeefd26c-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Meanwhile, water closets were finally installed in Williams Hall, Wells Hall, and Abbot Hall in 1896, just in time for Abbot\u2019s assignment to the newly formed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/womens-building\/\">Department of Domestic Science<\/a>. Marston, and a student petition containing more than 150 signatures. The Board in 1899 assured the student body that \u201cthe first matter to be taken up in the line of [new] buildings\u201d would be a new bathhouse, but it was another three years before the Board took any action, during which time maintenance on the old bathhouse \u201cpractically ceased.\u201d Finally in January 1902 the Board set newly appointed College Architect&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/architects\/#Bowd\">Edwyn Bowd<\/a>&nbsp;to work on a design, and in a sign that the College\u2019s finances had surely changed, allocated $18,000 toward its construction.<sup data-fn=\"41368544-b220-46ae-b922-271e3fe8a833\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#41368544-b220-46ae-b922-271e3fe8a833\" id=\"41368544-b220-46ae-b922-271e3fe8a833-link\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The new bathhouse was one story tall, with brick walls and a flat roof, erected by contractors Chittenden &amp; Skinner of Lansing and completed in 1903. It was placed just to the north of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/armory\/\">Armory<\/a>, which remained the principal indoor space for athletics and physical education, with a connecting passage between the buildings.<sup><a href=\"#footnote_2_1259\" id=\"identifier_2_1259\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"At the time, Bowd was also asked to determine the feasibility of adding a second story to the Armory so that a proper gymnasium could be added to it. Today the site of the first bathhouse is completely transformed: it stood mere feet behind (to the north of) the statue of John A. Hannah on the front lawn of the Hannah Administration Building.<sup data-fn=\"e1d85961-1e86-4eb2-a5b0-31ea29c36e12\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e1d85961-1e86-4eb2-a5b0-31ea29c36e12\" id=\"e1d85961-1e86-4eb2-a5b0-31ea29c36e12-link\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1919, having been superceded by facilities in the new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/gymnasium\/\">Gymnasium<\/a>, the second bathhouse was converted into a practice hall for the band.
