Image source:\u00a0MSU Physical Plant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When the Michigan Agricultural College was founded in 1855, its primary purpose was to provide an education in scientific agriculture. Yet at the time, the field of scientific agriculture barely existed even as a concept. The College\u2019s early years were marked by rudimentary experimentation and, occasionally, a steep learning curve. A famous example is the 1857 turnip crop, which was sown so generously that despite repeated thinnings, the plants grew \u201cthick as hair on a dog\u201d and the resulting roots came out more slender than carrots. (Later successes, such as the 1859 bumper crop, were less publicized by the school\u2019s detractors.)<sup data-fn=\"a65abcce-676d-4a80-b124-a16d51ff3d6a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a65abcce-676d-4a80-b124-a16d51ff3d6a\" id=\"a65abcce-676d-4a80-b124-a16d51ff3d6a-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Prior to the first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/ag-lab\/\">Agriculture Laboratory<\/a>, built in 1889, the Department of Agriculture \u201chad occupied\u2026 one classroom at a time when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/chem-lab\/\">chemistry<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/botany-lab\/\">botany<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/vet-lab\/\">veterinary<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/engineering-shops\/\">engineering<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/hort-lab\/\">horticulture<\/a>&nbsp;each enjoyed separate buildings.\u201d With its own building, over the next twenty years research in agriculture grew to the status of a full-fledged science. Image source:\u00a0MSU Physical Plant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Built at a cost of $182,000, Agriculture Hall was the largest building on campus when it was dedicated in 1909, being 86 by 190 feet and five stories tall. It was designed by College Architect&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/architects\/#Bowd\">Edwyn A. Bowd<\/a>&nbsp;and constructed on the former site of the College\u2019s second horse barn, a placement made possible by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/farm-complex\/\">consolidation of the school\u2019s farm buildings<\/a>&nbsp;on a site to the south of this building. The hall housed classrooms and laboratories for subjects such as farm mechanics and machinery, animal husbandry, agronomy, and soil chemistry. Upper floors contained offices, and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources resides there to this day.<sup data-fn=\"c9c3978a-6332-49b7-938a-ee13983ccae2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c9c3978a-6332-49b7-938a-ee13983ccae2\" id=\"c9c3978a-6332-49b7-938a-ee13983ccae2-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The center of \u201cAg Hall\u201d originally included a livestock judging pavilion, which protruded to the rear and included a gallery for spectators. It was also used as an assembly hall for social gatherings and dances. This was converted into a classroom auditorium after it was superseded by the Judging Pavilion, which stood between North and South Shaw Lanes from 1938 until 1997. Forsyth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/laboratory-row\/\">Laboratory Row<\/a>, Agriculture Hall is listed on the state historic register. In April 2013, with the demolition of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/womens-building\/\">Morrill Hall<\/a>&nbsp;about to commence, the Board of Trustees voted to rename Ag Hall as the Justin S.
