Forsyth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A man of many talents, Professor Chace Newman (July 27, 1871 \u2013 November 2, 1953) was first employed by the College in 1892, and taught engineering drawing and design for more than forty years until his retirement on September 1, 1939. He designed this house himself, his second in East Lansing (the first was on the Michigan Avenue side of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/delta\/\">Delta<\/a>). He taught Sunday School at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/peoples-church\/\">Peoples Church<\/a>&nbsp;and was one of East Lansing\u2019s first Aldermen, as well as its first historian. He designed East Lansing\u2019s first street numbering system in 1911 and revised it to its current form in 1920. For many years he even hand-lettered M.A.C. diplomas in Old English script.<sup data-fn=\"1b65df27-9bf6-4446-bc19-206749efde9c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1b65df27-9bf6-4446-bc19-206749efde9c\" id=\"1b65df27-9bf6-4446-bc19-206749efde9c-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Perhaps Newman\u2019s greatest contribution to East Lansing history is a wonderfully detailed map of the young city made in 1913 and revised in 1915. The short alley behind the Newman home is labeled as \u201cTower Lane\u201d on his map, and refers to the water tower that once stood at the top of the hill to serve the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/oakwood\/\">Oakwood<\/a>&nbsp;subdivision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Chace and Emma Young Newman\u2019s daughter Ruth Emma Newman (M.A.C.\u00a0\u201922) was a teacher at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/central-school\/\">Central School<\/a>. She was about age 8 when the family built this house. In the 1970s, she remarked that the house had \u201caged little in appearance,\u201d a statement which still holds true five decades later.
