Marshall joined the staff of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/station-terrace\/\">Experiment Station<\/a>&nbsp;in 1896 as bacteriologist and hygienist, a position he held until 1902. During this period, he somehow managed to find the time to secure a Ph.D. from the University at Ann Arbor as well as to study abroad at the Pasteur Institute.<sup data-fn=\"ff5930fa-82a9-4bbb-8e7f-c3fe4cb3a53d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ff5930fa-82a9-4bbb-8e7f-c3fe4cb3a53d\" id=\"ff5930fa-82a9-4bbb-8e7f-c3fe4cb3a53d-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Prodded by the combined urging of the state board of health, the state livestock commission, and the state Board of Agriculture, in 1900 M.A.C. formed the Department of Bacteriology and Farm Hygiene, one of the earliest in America. Dr. Marshall was appointed Professor and head of the department, a position he held until 1912. At first, the new department was housed on the second floor of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/vet-lab\/\">Veterinary Laboratory<\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"508402df-b6df-4eff-a6e0-7b21522bc6dc\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#508402df-b6df-4eff-a6e0-7b21522bc6dc\" id=\"508402df-b6df-4eff-a6e0-7b21522bc6dc-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 1902, the Department of Bacteriology and Hygiene (having dropped \u201cFarm\u201d from its name) received a state-of-the-art Bacteriology Laboratory, built at a cost of about $30,000. The lab, \u201creputedly the first building [in the United States] for research and teaching in bacteriology,\u201d was designed by College Architect <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/architects\/#Bowd\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"166\">Edwyn A. Bowd<\/a> and built by Conrad Schaffer &amp; Son of Saline. It was constructed of red stock brick (likely from the college\u2019s brickyard) with white stone trim, and Michigan fieldstone piers supporting an entryway arch in Richardsonian Romanesque style. At the rear was an attached brick stable to house livestock under study. \u201cOn the inside [the walls] are made of plain white sand brick, the seams being filled, and the whole surface finished with two coats of zinc paint. Equipment is all of the most modern style.\u201d It was located slightly east of the main laboratory row, between <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/hort-lab\/\">Horticulture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/botany-lab\/#1892\">Botany<\/a>, a site previously occupied by the Experiment Station Forcing House, a heated greenhouse.<sup data-fn=\"c17e8ce2-72b7-49df-b5a4-39c54bdf659a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c17e8ce2-72b7-49df-b5a4-39c54bdf659a\" id=\"c17e8ce2-72b7-49df-b5a4-39c54bdf659a-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">From these solid beginnings, Dr. Marshall created a world-class department. It \u201cwas the first to produce hog cholera serum in the state, distributing it to farmers,\u201d the profits helping fund improvements to the laboratory\u2014which was soon touted in the catalog as \u201cone of the best equipped laboratories of its kind in the country.\u201d In addition, the journal&nbsp;<em>Microbiology<\/em>, edited by Marshall, \u201cwas a standard text for many years.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"9843feea-287d-4aeb-96aa-ee79f7daf78b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#9843feea-287d-4aeb-96aa-ee79f7daf78b\" id=\"9843feea-287d-4aeb-96aa-ee79f7daf78b-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Charles E. Marshall left M.A.C. in 1912 for an appointment as graduate dean at Massachusetts Agricultural College (today, UMass Amherst). He was succeeded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/giltner\/\">Dr. Ward Giltner<\/a>, who led the department for the next thirty-five years. The department remained in \u201cOld Bact\u2019y\u201d until 1952, when it moved to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/giltner-hall\/#giltner\">hall bearing Dr. Giltner\u2019s name<\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"41517e2e-60e3-48e6-babe-2e3097dee8bb\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#41517e2e-60e3-48e6-babe-2e3097dee8bb\" id=\"41517e2e-60e3-48e6-babe-2e3097dee8bb-link\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Over the years, this Department might have had the greatest number of different names of any at Michigan State: Bacteriology and Farm Hygiene (1900), Bacteriology and Hygiene (1902), Bacteriology and Public Health (1943), Microbiology and Public Health (1954), Microbiology (1993). Like the other members of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/laboratory-row\/\">Laboratory Row<\/a>, it is listed on the state historic register. It too has benefitted from adaptive reuse, in this case with the 1991 addition of a seminar room at the rear of the structure. Designed by the M.S.U. Physical Plant, the addition is intended to complement the original building\u2019s round-headed windows.<sup data-fn=\"b89ccfaf-402f-412c-940a-3a8439a4ef92\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b89ccfaf-402f-412c-940a-3a8439a4ef92\" id=\"b89ccfaf-402f-412c-940a-3a8439a4ef92-link\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In 2002, M.S.U. Trustee Randall L. Pittman (M.S.U.&nbsp;\u201976) and his wife, Mary E. Pittman, made a $6 million donation to restore Marshall Hall, a project that modernized the building\u2019s interior to improve both functionality and safety. Ornamental gardens both front and back added to the beauty of the site. The restoration was completed by fall term, 2005, and the building was rededicated as part of Sesquicentennial festivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Due to their generosity the donors received the opportunity to append a name to the building. In a shining example of class and appropriateness, they chose to show their esteem for Mr. Pittman\u2019s friend and mentor, the late Dr. Walter Adams (1922\u20131998), Distinguished Professor of Economics and President Emeritus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\" id=\"A\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"138\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/adams-MSU.small_.jpg?resize=138%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-812\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Walter Adams, official portrait as M.S.U. Image source:&nbsp;<span id=\"msu\"><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSU Archives<\/a><\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Walter Adams was born in Vienna, Austria, emigrating to the United States as a young man. He embraced his adopted country with unwavering patriotism, serving in World War II first with the 83rd Infantry Division and later with the 11th Armored Division, and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic conduct. After the war he completed his Ph.D. at Yale on the G.I. Bill&nbsp;before joining the M.S.C. faculty in 1947. He became a Professor of Economics in 1956, and a Distinguished Professor just four years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Following the retirement of John A. Hannah, Adams assumed the Presidency of M.S.U. on April 1, 1969. From the outset he declared he would only hold the post on an interim basis until a suitable replacement could be found, even though he soon proved to have a talent for the job. For nine short months he led the University through some of its most troubled times, handling student strikes and campus unrest with diplomacy and aplomb. In spite of his popularity with students, faculty, and the Board of Trustees\u2014and a petition with 20,000 signatures begging him to remain as President\u2014on January 1, 1970, Adams returned to his calling as Economics Professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">As an economist, Dr. Adams was widely respected, and was frequently asked to be an expert witness at Congressional budget hearings. His senior-level Econ.&nbsp;444 class was considered one of the most difficult and rewarding at Michigan State. Adams was tough but fair\u2014always receptive to new ideas, while those caught unprepared or nodding off found him \u201ca real bastard.\u201d Along with his extensive research he co-authored several books including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/books\/link.php?id=0804749698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Bigness Complex: Industry, Labor, and Government in the American Economy<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/books\/link.php?id=0324012969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Tobacco Wars<\/em><\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/books\/link.php?id=0691000530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adam Smith Goes to Moscow<\/em><\/a>. <em>Is the World Our Campus?<\/em>, co-authored with John A. Garraty and published in 1960 while Michigan State was in the midst of <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/weblog\/2006\/04\/forging-a-fateful-alliance-michigan-state-university-and-the-vietnam-war-by-john-ernst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its contract to provide technical assistance<\/a> to the government of South Vietnam, voiced their concerns about the propriety and efficacy of this type of overseas project as provided by American universities.<sup><a href=\"#footnote_1_806\" id=\"identifier_1_806\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"This book is out of print, but a scan from the University of California, Davis is available online.\">&dagger;<\/a><\/sup> Adams also wrote an insightful memoir of his stint as President called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/books\/adams-test.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Test<\/em><\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"d15eb3c8-67ba-4064-8e2a-d4253bd5c146\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d15eb3c8-67ba-4064-8e2a-d4253bd5c146\" id=\"d15eb3c8-67ba-4064-8e2a-d4253bd5c146-link\">8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waltadams-and-author.jpg?resize=320%2C229&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-807\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waltadams-and-author.jpg?w=320&amp;ssl=1 320w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waltadams-and-author.jpg?resize=300%2C215&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Walter Adams and the author at Landon Field (now Walter Adams Field), November 23, 1991. His vocal support of the basketball team from a seat behind the visiting team\u2019s bench in Jenison Fieldhouse was legendary. He donated funds to the&nbsp;<span id=\"msu\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spartanmarchingband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spartan Marching Band<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;for the purchase of several instruments including mellophones (one of which this author had the honor of playing for a season). For many years he donned a green Tyrolean hat (complete with green-and-white plume) and led the band in its traditional march to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kevinforsyth.net\/ELMAC\/stadium\/\">stadium<\/a>, and he was named an honorary member of the Spartan Marching Band\u2014an extremely exclusive group<sup><a href=\"#footnote_2_806\" id=\"identifier_2_806\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"This author is aware of only three other honorary members:\n\n\n\n\nMrs. Beryl Falcone (1920&ndash;2015, M.S.U. MA &rsquo;62), executive secretary of the M.S.U. Alumni Band Association and widow of Dr. Leonard Falcone (1899&ndash;1985, Director of the Spartan Marching Band 1927&ndash;1967)\n\n\n\nDr. James W. Costar (1925&ndash;2015, M.S.U. Ed.D. &rsquo;58), Professor Emeritus of Teacher Education and founder of the Band Fan Club\n\n\n\nFootball Coach Mark Dantonio, who was presented with his jacket in 2014 and may be the only Spartan coach ever honored with such.\">&dagger;&dagger;<\/a><\/sup> who are the only non-members officially sanctioned to wear the \u201cMichigan State Band\u201d jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Walter Adams retired from M.S.U. in 1992. He succumbed to pancreatic cancer on September 8, 1998. On his last birthday, a few weeks before his passing, he was serenaded at his Lantern Hill home by a 200-member contingent of the marching band, who played the fight song and sang the alma mater, \u201cM.S.U. Shadows,\u201d for a proud but tearful Adams and his wife, Pauline (1922&#8211;2024, Associate Professor Emerita of American Thought and Language 1956&#8211;1992).
